Joost van der Hoeven, researcher at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, interviews Joost Krijnen about his recent series of lithographs, made during a residency at the Dutch Museum of Lithography in Valkenswaard. The talk explores the artist's work and how the medium of lithography fits within his oeuvre.
Joost Krijnen (Breda, 1983), based and working in Amsterdam, creates drawings and paintings characterized by a distinctive energy, driven by the spontaneity and speed of his hand. His lighthearted visual language contrasts with the dark humor and macabre themes that often take center stage. As a result, his work teeters on the edge between playfulness and seriousness, where sharp contrasts and unexpected turns engage the viewer. This tension between whimsicality and darker themes lends his oeuvre a complexity that is both intriguing and challenging. Krijnen’s art invites exploration, with every detail revealing new stories and meanings.
Krijnen studied at AKV|St. Joost in Breda and was an artist-in-residence at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Recent exhibitions include Liefde voor Tekenen (2024) at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam and Pratende papegaaien lezen niet (2022) at Cokkie Snoei in Rotterdam. He received the Royal Award for Modern Painting (2015) and the De Scheffer Prize from the Dordrechts Museum (2015). His work is included in prominent collections such as the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Schunck* Heerlen, and the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.
