m.simons is a contemporary art gallery based in Amsterdam, founded in 2021. The gallery develops a conceptually driven exhibition program that focuses on the formal and material conditions of the artwork. Through carefully curated, intimate exhibitions, m.simons investigates how a painting, sculpture, or photographic image comes into being, and which choices, gestures, and materials underpin its formation.
The program centers on artists who engage with fundamental questions concerning image, support, and material. Rather than prioritizing narrative or spectacle, the emphasis lies on process: how a canvas is constructed, how a form manifests itself in space, or how a photographic image emerges through technical and conceptual decisions. The gallery represents artists whose careers began in the 1990s through the 2010s, bringing together emerging and mid-career positions that each reflect, in distinct ways, on the conditions of their medium.
Alongside its represented artists, m.simons also works with the secondary market, presenting works by internationally renowned artists that resonate conceptually with the gallery’s program. This approach creates a dialogue between generations and practices, broadening the program while maintaining its conceptual coherence. Exhibitions encompass a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, works on paper, photography, and video.
Works from the program of m.simons have been placed in significant private and public collections. Artists represented by the gallery are internationally active, with solo exhibitions at institutions worldwide and regular participation in museum group exhibitions in the Netherlands, including Kunstmuseum Den Haag, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
Founder Michiel Simons brings over a decade of experience within the Dutch contemporary art field. In previous roles, he collaborated with international institutions and galleries such as Luhring Augustine (New York), the Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam), and Yamaguchi Kunst-Bau (Osaka). He is the chair of the Dutch Gallery Association, is a board member of the Nyenrode Art Foundation and has previously served on the invitation committee of Amsterdam Art Week.
