NEW WORK

m.simons proudly presents NEW WORK, the second solo exhibition by Jan van der Ploeg at the gallery.
In recent years, Van der Ploeg has realized exhibitions in Japan, Germany, and Switzerland, and created monumental wall paintings at locations including Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Dutch Embassy in Brussels, Doornroosje Theatre in Nijmegen, and the new bridge at the Oude Haagseweg between Amsterdam and Badhoevedorp.

In NEW WORK, Van der Ploeg introduces a new dimension to his practice. In addition to the canvases and wall paintings that have earned him international recognition, he presents spatial work for the first time: a series of cylindrical sculptures that function as three-dimensional paintings. These tall, vertical objects are divided into two contrasting color fields and act as markers within the space. They enter into dialogue with their surroundings, with one another, and with the viewer—who now moves not only in front of the work, but also among it.

The new paintings in NEW WORK build upon the motif Van der Ploeg introduced in his previous solo exhibition at m.simons: a rhythmic pattern of narrow parallel bands that repeat in figure-eight formations. Whereas earlier works often relied on just two colors, this new series explores the challenge of a richer and more complex palette. By combining multiple hues within a single composition, a new sense of depth emerges—where contrast and tension unfold not merely between two tones, but across the entire field of color.

Jan van der Ploeg (Amsterdam, 1959) is renowned for his wall paintings, in which color and form engage directly with architecture. His work has been exhibited worldwide in museums, galleries, and public spaces. Recent solo exhibitions include Kenakian and Concept Space (Japan), St. Hilaire Galerie (Fribourg), and Taubert Contemporary (Berlin).

NEW WORK will be on view from November 28, 2025 through January 17, 2026 at m.simons, Amsterdam.
