m.simons is pleased to present Come On, Play It Again, a group exhibition curated by Robbin Heyker and centred around the work of Belgian painter Raoul De Keyser (1930–2012).
The title Come On, Play It Again refers to De Keyser’s recurring interest in repetition. In his paintings, forms, compositions and gestures are revisited and transformed, allowing each work to become a new variation on something familiar. Rather than repetition as a fixed formula, De Keyser approaches painting as an open process: something that can always be played again.
The exhibition brings together De Keyser’s work with that of seven contemporary artists: Peter Shear, Kurt Ryslavy, Matthew Musgrave, Ido Vunderink, Mirthe Klück, Magnus Frederik Clausen and Robbin Heyker. The exhibition explores painting as an open and ongoing process, where forms, gestures and ideas can be repeated, altered and reconsidered. This playful and intuitive approach to painting is central to De Keyser’s practice, in which simple forms and painterly gestures continually move between abstraction and representation.
Artists
Raoul De Keyser (1930–2012) was a Belgian painter whose work developed from observations of everyday life towards an increasingly abstract language of colour, form and gesture. His work was included in Documenta IX in 1992 and is held in major international collections.
Peter Shear (b. 1980) is an American painter whose restrained works move between abstraction and figuration, using simple forms, lines and colour as starting points for open-ended compositions.
Kurt Ryslavy (b. 1961) is an Austrian-born, Brussels-based artist whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, writing, installation, performance and video.
Matthew Musgrave (b. 1985) is a British painter based in London whose work investigates the possibilities of painting through material, gesture and abstraction.
Ido Vunderink (b. 1955) is a Dutch artist whose practice focuses on painting, form and geometric abstraction, often exploring the relationship between structure, material and space.
Mirthe Klück (b. 1991) is a Dutch artist whose practice examines material, texture and construction, translating physical and everyday elements into abstract compositions.
Magnus Frederik Clausen (b. 1981) is a Danish artist based in Copenhagen whose practice questions the conventions of painting and the status of the painted object.
Robbin Heyker (b. 1976) is a Dutch painter based in The Hague and Beijing. His work examines the act of painting through repetition, rules, gestures and the element of play.
Come On, Play It Again opens on Friday, 4 September 2026, and will be on view through 10 October 2026 at m.simons, Amsterdam.
