Lopulissa has already had a tremendous art season. It started off with a duo exhibition in the Museum Maluku in The Hague with Jaya Pelupessy. During a solo exhibition at m.simons, we took Lopulissa’s work to Brussels where we closed 2021 with a large overview exhibition of his celebrated Embrace series. This year started with a solo exhibition in CODA museum in Apeldoorn, in which large scale canvases were shown alongside stainless steel sculpture.
Exploring the canvas and its possibilities has been a defining characteristic of Lopulissa’s work for years. In 2019, he found out that using a watercolour technique on canvas, large scale soft gradients can be achieved. More recently, he has started cutting up the canvas, to sew, or to paste it back together to create collaged and constructed canvases. The artist characterizes his technique as reversed painting; all the colors are applied in preparation, while the eventual composition is created by cutting up the canvas and sowing it back together again.
For Art Rotterdam 2022 Lopulissa further explored and reversed the fundamental concepts of painting. He cut up his painted canvasses in even thin strips and wove them together with blank canvas on a large stretcher. Even more so than in previous series, this weaving process resulted in canvases with emphasized texture and surface.
Nazif Lopulissa & m.simons are looking forward to welcoming you to the 2022 edition of Art Rotterdam. Please let us know if you need tickets or other information.
